Format Solutions and Fairy Tales

After some serious thought, and a good night's rest, I think I've figured out how to post segments of screenplay onto the blog while retaining the format.

I use Celtx at the moment to do my screenwriting, which is a wonderful and free alternative to Final Draft and is available for download here: CeltX. Anyway, it doesn't come with all the bells and whistles that Final Draft undoubtedly promises, but it does let you export your script as an HTML file. I'm hoping that I can update the blog in the view html and copy+paste the source from the saved HTML script file onto the blog.

I think it worked. After the jump is an original short I wrote two months ago called "Goldilox" It's a modern twist on the old fairy tale. Hope you enjoy.

Well, for some reason, I can't seem to get it to retain the formatting defined by the HTML and it kinda ruins it. Dialogue lines run long and Character Headers aren't capitalized, but are slammed against the left margin and look terrible. It's a problem.

Update: I've figured out the whole issue. Turns out, I wasn't putting enough room between the Jump Break HTML and the HTML of the script segment. So now, without further adieu, I present Goldilox:

Goldilox

FADE IN

int. therapist's office - day

A balding man in a tweed jacket stands by a file cabinet in the corner of his office. He runs his finger over files with names on the tabs until he arrives at one that reads "BEAR, ALDOUS" and pulls it out. Behind him is a large chair and a therapist's couch.

female voice (V.O.)

Doctor Grimm, your three o'clock is here.

The man, DOCTOR GRIMM, moves to the intercom on his desk and presses a button.

DOCTOR GRIMM

Send him in, Lydia.

Grimm takes a seat in a tall-backed leather bound chair. A door OPENS and CLOSES out of view. Grimm looks towards the door.

DOCTOR GRIMM (cont'd)

Have a seat, Mr. Bear.

Grimm opens the file and scans it for a second.

DOCTOR GRIMM (CONT'D)

If memory serves me, last week we were talking about your wife, is that right?

Grimm looks up from the file across the room to the couch where a man in a bear suit is seated. This is Aldous Bear, or PAPA. Papa looks towards the ceiling

papa

She's at it again. This week it was the porridge.

ext. field - day

A table sits in the middle of an open field, in the distance a wooded forest area. Atop the table are three bowls, each larger than the last. Steam rises from the bowls.

The largest bowl has a spoon sitting in it and it is filled with porridge.

The medium bowl is in the same condition.

The smallest bowl has been scraped clean of porridge and the spoon lies on the table next to it.

Papa walks towards the table, behind him is a woman in a bear suit, MAMA, and a boy in a bear suit, BABY.

When they arrive at the table, they line up at their respective bowls and look down.

Baby starts crying. Mama wraps her arms around him to comfort him and sends an angry glare towards Papa.

INT. THERAPIST'S OFFICE - DAY

Papa is on the couch and Grimm is in his chair. Grimm takes notes as Papa speaks.

papa

It's like, I was on the walk with you guys. There's no way I had anything to do with it.

grimm

And what makes you think she blames you for it?

papa

Well...

EXT. FIELD - night

Mama and Papa bear lie in a bed together in the field where the table had been.

Maybe twenty feet away, in a smaller bed, is Baby Bear. Baby is sleeping soundly.

Papa rolls over and starts to spoon Mama, rubbing her shoulders with his paws. Mama's eyes are open and she looks disgruntled. Papa starts kissing Mama's shoulders.

mama

Not tonight, Aldous.

papa

Bobby's asleep.

Papa kisses more.

papa (cont'd)

C'mon, give Papa some honey...

Mama shrugs Papa's arms away and rolls over, facing him.

mama

I'm not in the mood.

PAPA

No surprise there.

mama

What's that mean?

PAPA

How long's it been, Peggy? Two months? Three?

mama

I'm just not-

PAPA

You're never!

mama

Shh!

They both look towards the bed where Baby is still asleep.

mama (cont'd)

Look, Aldous... I just... I think maybe we need to...

Papa stares at her as her gaze looks up towards the stars.

PAPA

What?

MAMA

I think maybe we need separate beds...

Mama rolls over and closes her eyes. Papa lies there, dumbstruck for a moment.

INT. THERAPIST'S OFFICE - DAY

Papa sits upright suddenly on the couch.

PAPA

Do you believe that? Separate beds!

grimm

My parents have always had separate beds. It doesn't mean that the intimacy has left the relationship.

PAPA

Intimacy? That left years ago. But I'm a bear, doc. A bear with needs...

grimm

Hmmm...

Grimm thinks for a moment.

grimm (cont'd)

Are you still having the dream?

PAPA

Almost every night.

EXT. Forest - NIGHT

Papa bear is among the trees, walking, smoking a cigar. A girl GIGGLES. Papa stops and looks around, but can't see her.

Papa continues walking.

INT. THERAPIST'S OFFICE - DAY

Papa is relaxed on the couch, eyes closed.

PAPA

Then I see her, with those tight little curls. The way her hair shimmers, all golden in the moonlight...

Papa's voice trails off. Grimm takes notes.

GRIMM

And then what happens?

Papa smiles. He pauses and clears his throat.

PAPA

Hem! I just wake up.

GRIMM

Nothing else?

PAPA

Sometimes... I guess I kiss her. I dunno.

Grimm writes furiously.

PAPA (CONT'D)

Then she runs off, behind a tree. I call out for her, but she's gone.

Papa pauses and looks over to Grimm.

PAPA (CONT'D)

I said her name in my sleep.

GRIMM

Peggy?

Papa shakes his head.

GRIMM (CONT'D)

Oh...

EXT. Forest - DAY

Papa, Mama, and Baby walk through the woods together. Baby lags behind several feet.

Papa and Mama speak in loud, forced whispers.

PAPA

I swear Peg, I don't know any Goldies. Not a one.

MAMA

I know what I heard.

papa

There's no one but you for me.

MAMA

It's that slut from the river, isn't it? I saw the way she looked at you when the salmon were going upstream.

PAPA

It's not her.

MAMA

Who is it?

PAPA

It's no one. There's no one. Please, Peg...

The bears exit the woods and walk into the field.

MAMA

I don't believe you. I'm sorry, Aldous, I've known you too long for you to pull one on me.

In the field are three beds, each one larger than the last.

MAMA (CONT'D)

Hell's bells!

Standing next the beds, it's clear that someone has thrown the sheets back and unmade the beds.

Mama glares over at Papa.

PAPA

What?

Mama is silent.

PAPA (CONT'D)

What? Don't look at me like that. I was with you in the forest.

Mama's eyes well with tears.

MAMA

Goldy supposed to stop by? Huh?

PAPA

I don't know what you're talking about!

MAMA

Stop it, just stop it, Aldous!

The tears run down Mama's face.

MAMA (CONT'D)

After all I've done for you, for Bobby... In my own bed...

PAPA

I haven't done anything.

Baby bear wanders over to his own bed and pulls the covers back. A look of surprise covers his face.

MAMA

The worst of it is that you couldn't just do this shit in the woods... But here... where Bobby could have seen.

PAPA

I haven't done-

baby

Mama, Papa, come here!

Mama and Papa go running to Baby's side and they look down into the bed.

Mama turns to Papa and gives him a look of absolute disgust.

MAMA

I'm taking Bobby and I'm leaving.

(to Baby)

Go run, grab your things, Baby.

Baby bear runs off and Mama follows. Papa stands by the bedside, staring down at it.

In the bed is a young woman, with golden curls. GOLDILOCKS.

INT. THERAPIST'S OFFICE - DAY

Tears are in Papa's eyes. He takes a deep breath and tries to compose himself. Grimm hands him a box of tissue.

PAPA

Thank you.

Papa dabs his eyes, blows his nose.

PAPA (CONT'D)

So she's spending some time at her mother's. I doubt she'll come back. I just... I don't know how I can prove to her I didn't do anything.

GRIMM

Sometimes, our intentions count for more than our actions. Because you dreamt of Goldy, in some ways you had already committed adultery in your heart.

PAPA

So, this is what I wanted all along?

GRIMM

I don't know about that...

PAPA

No, you're onto something... I wanted the honey... Now Goldy and I-

GRIMM

You're seeing Goldy?

PAPA

Well, I mean, Doc. I'm a bear with needs.

Grimm nods. He looks at his watch.

GRIMM

I'm sorry, Mr. Bear, it seems time is up. We'll pick up next week where we left off.

Papa rises from the couch, nods, and exits.

Grimm goes to the filing cabinet and puts away the folder, pulling out another. He moves to the intercom and presses a button.

GRIMM (CONT'D)

Lydia, send in my four-thirty, please.

Grimm takes a seat in his chair, opens the folder. The door opens and closes. Grimm thumbs through the folder.

GRIMM (CONT'D)

So, have you stopped jeopardizing your own safety for the attention of that huntsman yet?

Grimm looks up from the folder. Across from him on the couch is a young girl in a red riding-hood...
